SYNCHRONIZED SKATING

What is synchronized ice skating?

Synchronized ice skating (synchro skating for short) is a large and fast-growing discipline of figure skating where a squad of 8-16 (the number of skaters on a team depends on the level) skaters perform on ice as a team, moving as one flowing unit at high speeds while completing difficult footwork.

For a synchronized team to flow in unison, individual skaters must be competent at a variety of skating skills, including speed, footwork and ice presence.

We’re now taking enrolments for Synchronized Development!

How to get involved with synchronized ice skating

We run a Synchronized Development course once per year, usually in December/January, in preparation for the upcoming season. There is a course for skaters aged 6-15, and one for skaters aged 16+.

Skaters do need to have a solid grasp of ice skating, and should have passed the Advanced level in our Learn to Skate program.

At the beginning of each season in February, Ice Synchro WA hold tryout days, where skaters can be invited to join a team!

Depending on your age, you could be invited to join:

  • Fireflies (development)
  • Bees (15 and under)
  • Cohesion Mixed (16-29)
  • Cohesion Adult Basic (30+)

More advanced skaters or skaters from interstate/overseas will be invited to join other teams.

Our synchro teams

Fireflies logo

Fireflies

Fireflies is an entry level development team at Cockburn Ice Arena, suitable for skaters from our Learn to Skate and Synchro Development classes. Skaters progress from local to national competitions when they graduate to join the Bees. The emphasis is on fun and teamship in a supportive environment.

Bees logo

Bees

Team Bees prepares skaters aged 8-15 for national level competition. New skaters are always welcome and this division (Basic Novice) is lots of fun while still offering challenges as skaters improve individual and synchro skills. Teamship and working together is an important ethos, as it is across all our teams.

Jitterbugs logo

Jitterbugs

Jitterbugs is WA’s longest running team with a proud history in the establishment of synchro skating in WA. Generally skaters are attaining “Preliminary” and ‘Elementary” pattern tests, and are preparing for the national championships with a view to adding to the team’s medal history. Jitterbugs are our Advanced Novice team, and is for skaters aged 8-15.

Infusion junior logo

Infusion (junior)

In the Infusion Junior team skaters focus on national and international competition. Often there will be squadding between Jitterbugs and Infusion Senior to facilitate team transitions. This level introduces more competitiveness and achievement at national elite level. Skaters are required to have “Elementary” pattern tests and working towards “Basic Novice”.

At this level skaters are prepared for international competition: the team has consistently won medals at the Australian Championships and twice represented Australia at the World Synchronized Skating Championships.

This division is aimed predominately at skaters 16-24. Cohesion Mixed focuses on skating skills for young adults and teenagers. Cohesion Mixed is an entry point to synchronized skating for skaters who have graduated from our synchronized squad program.

Cohesion logo

Cohesion (adult)

Cohesion is an adult division team, for teams whose programs are intended to meet a more basic level of skating and for skaters who have mainly started skating as adults. It is an entry point for adults coming out of the Learn to Skate program wanting to join a synchronized skating team. This team competes in WA and national competitions.

Cohesion logo

Cohesion (adult Advanced)

This division is for teams formed of former higher level competitive skaters and have passed national level tests. This team competes in WA and national competitions.
